Moms Across Country to Take Part in National Program to Increase Financial Literacy

Empowered PURSE is New Component of Mothers & More Mother’s Day Campaign

Elmhurst, IL – Mothers & More chapters across the country are hard at work collecting new or gently used purses as part of this year’s Mother’s Day campaign Power of a Purse. Power of a Purse is an annual Mothers & More drive designed to draw attention to mothers’ economic issues. Last year, more than 10,000 purses were donated, many filled with personal items for financially vulnerable women in local communities.

This year, Mothers & More has added a new component to Power of a Purse, The Empowered PURSE, a multi-part program that provides mothers resources for financial education and support.

“Empowering mothers to have more control of their financial decisions and goals will help lead them toward more hopeful financial futures,” said Gina M. Earles, CEO of Mothers & More. “The Mothers & More Empowered PURSE campaign aims to do this in a fun and unique way while also enabling mothers to connect with one another.”

According to the National Women’s Law Center, 8.5 million of the 12.8 million children living in poverty are being raised in single parent households – 89% of which are headed by women. Yet women still earn only 77% of the income of their male counterparts and as a result, are trying to raise their children on less money.

Empowered PURSE is a series of conversations that guide moms on their own money journey. Moms will connect with each other as they learn how to accomplish their goals and protect their futures by taking charge of their financial decisions. As a result, moms will emerge with a more concrete, more hopeful financial future. Most importantly, mothers will walk away with a plan that makes it possible to live with greater intention and reach personal goals.

Power of a Purse also returns to the 2011 Mother’s Day Campaign. Mothers & More chapters partner with non-profit organizations in communities to distribute the collected purses. Donated purses, along with Mothers & More events that celebrate the power of those purses, directly reach mothers who already face the effects of real financial vulnerability in their daily lives.

Mothers & More is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers.
