Moms know the ins and outs of diapers better than anyone, and they appreciate how something as simple as a diaper can keep babies happy.
However, nearly one-third of poor and low-income mothers in the U.S. face a daily struggle of not having enough diapers to keep her baby clean, dry and healthy. Known as diaper need, this hidden consequence of poverty is a significant cause of maternal stress according to a 2013 study published in Pediatrics. Plus, federal anti-poverty programs such as food stamps (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) do not cover diapers, which can cost up to $100 per month per baby.
In keeping with its calling to help moms everywhere through all stages, phases and transitions of motherhood, the national membership organization Mothers & More will celebrate its 14th Annual Mother’s Day Campaign with the “We Could All Use a Little Change” Diaper Drive benefitting the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) and its member diaper banks throughout the country.
From April 1 – May 31 Mothers & More chapters, working in more than 35 metro areas, are slated to hold diaper drives at a wide variety of community events, including a preschool fair, a consignment sale and a community play date, among others. Plus, the organization is hosting a virtual diaper drive on line via CrowdRise at www.crowdrise.com/MothersandMoreDiaperDrive.
The diapers and funds collected by Mothers & More will be distributed to a NDBN member diaper bank, where possible, or to a community-based organization that provides direct assistance to families in need. Diapers are a basic need for children in the U.S., as essential to their health and well-being as food, shelter and a mother’s love. While no federal provisions help families acquire diapers, diaper banks do.
National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) links together the more than 225 active diaper banks in the U.S. As a founding sponsor of NDBN, Huggies® donates 20 million diapers annually to the nonprofit organization, which in turn distributes the diapers directly to families in need through its affiliate network. In 2013, diaper banks provided diapers to more than 1.2 million babies.
